“AZIENDA AGRICOLA USIGLIAN DEL VESCOVO”

“Usiglian del Vescovo: a young company with a thousand years of history”

The origins of the “Tenuta Usiglian del Vescovo” date back to the Middle Ages. The first production of wine was documented in 1083 when the Bishop of Lucca ordered vines to be planted in the Manor of the fief of Usigliano to celebrate Mass. The first deed that attests to the estate’s existence is dated a few years earlier when, in 1078, the powerful Matilde di Canossa gifted Usigliano di Palaia to the Bishops of Lucca which, over time, became better known as “Usiglian del Vescovo”. Over the centuries Usiglian del Vescovo has experienced countless historical trials and tribulations as a result of the alternating influence of the Republics of Pisa and Florence. Under Florentine dominion, from 1509 and for three consecutive centuries, the long period of political stability favored the revival of the arts and commerce as well as the affirmation of a new philosophy of life imbued with the pleasures and beauty of the countryside. From a military garrison Usigliano was transformed into an elegant villa-farm and alongside the main building a space was also found for the services necessary for preserving and working the products obtained from the land. Today the farm carries out its activities in modern premises, maintaining the barrique cellar and the boardroom in the ancient medieval buildings. Here it is still possible to visit a long underground passage dug out using only the tools of the period which starts in the cellars and comes out in the neighboring valley. This passage was used in ancient times as an escape route in the event of a siege. Today Usiglian del Vescovo covers an area of around 160 hectares, 25 of which consist of vineyards containing Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet sauvignon, Syrah, Petit verdot, Chardonnay and Viognier vines, as well as 15 hectares of olive-groves. The unique soil and proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea make this an optimum vine growing environment. Here the vines enjoy special conditions which give our wines their uniqueness, exceptionally rich flavor and fresh taste.
